Look, Cover, Write, Check Spelling Activities for NLS Medium Frequency Wordlists (Years 4 and 5). Word Level Objectives: to practise new spellings regularly by "look, say, cover, write, check" strategy; to read and spell correctly the words in Appendix List 2.

Word level work: Spelling conventions and rules

  • Suffixes - Write the correct plural form for these nouns ending in f in the boxes. Objective 5: to investigate what happens to words ending in ‘f’ when suffixes are added

  • More Suffixes - complete each word by adding the correct suffix from the drop-down boxes
    Objective 6: to spell words with common endings (tion, ous, ture).

  • Prefixes
    Objective 7: To recognise and spell the prefixes: al, etc

Word level work: Vocabulary extension

  • Male and Female - words which imply gender.
    Word Level Objective 10: explore and discuss the implications of words which imply gender, including the -ess suffix.

  • Forming Adjectives - change these nouns and verbs into adjectives.
    Word Level Objective 13: a range of suffixes that can be added to nouns and verbs to make adjectives, e.g. able, ful, worthy

Sentence level work: Sentence construction and punctuation

  • Using the apostrophe with regular single nouns
    Sentence Level Objective 2b: use the apostrophe accurately to mark possession through understanding basic rules for apostrophising singular nouns, e.g . the man's hat...

  • Using the apostrophe with regular plural nouns
    Sentence Level Objective 2b: use the apostrophe accurately to mark possession through understanding basic rules for apostrophising ... plural nouns ending in 's', e.g. the doctors' surgery...

  • Using the apostrophe with irregular plural nouns
    Sentence Level Objective 2b: use the apostrophe accurately to mark possession through understanding basic rules for apostrophising... irregular plural nouns, e.g. men's room, children's playground.
