Sorting Animals into Groups

The "Skip navigation" link should bring you here to the start of the main content

Putting animals into groups is called classification. Classification is useful because it makes you think about how animals are similar to, or different from, each other. Grouping animals is not as easy as it may seem - you have to choose your groups carefully, or you may find that an animal belongs in more than one group!

Scientists put animals in the same group if they have similar features, behave in similar ways, have bodies that work in similar ways, or have ancestors that looked similar (so you can match them to fossils).

You can use a key to help you to identify an animal. A key is a series of questions which ask you about the animal you have in mind, so that you can find out what it is.

Try this key to identify pets.

1. Does the animal have feathers?
If Yes, it is a budgie.
If No, then go to 2

2. Does the animal have fins?
If Yes, it is a goldfish.
If No, then go to 3

3. Does the animal have legs?
If Yes, then go to 4
If No, it is a snake.

4. Does the animal have fur?
If Yes, it is a rabbit
If No, then go to 5

5. Does the animal have a shell?
If Yes, it is a tortoise.
If No, it is a spider.
