Look, Cover, Write, Check Spelling Activities for NLS Medium Frequency Wordlists (Years 4 and 5). Word Level Objectives: to practise new spellings regularly by "look, say, cover, write, check" strategy; to read and spell correctly the words in Appendix List 2.

National Literacy Strategy Year 4 Term 1

  • Homophones: to, two and too.
    Word Level Objective 6: distinguish between the spelling and meanings of common homophones.

  • Homophones: there, their and they're.
    Word Level Objective 6: distinguish between the spelling and meanings of common homophones.

  • Homophones: there/their and here/hear.
    Word Level Objective 6: distinguish between the spelling and meanings of common homophones.

  • Common Homophones: bare/bear; dear/deer; fair/fare; heel/heal; for/four
    Word Level Objective 6: distinguish between the spelling and meanings of common homophones.

  • Alphabetical Order: put these words into alphabetical order.
    Word Level Objective 12: use 3rd and 4th place letters to locate and sequence words in alphabetical order.

  • Changing nouns and adjectives into verbs: use the suffixes ate, en, ify, ise
    Word Level Objective 14: the ways in which nouns and adjectives can be made into verbs by the use of suffixes.

  • Fact or Opinion? - decide which of these statements are fact or opinion.
    Text Level Objective 19: understand and use the terms fact and opinion and begin to distinguish the two in reading and other media.
